It’s a bit odd probably (or recognizable?), but as soon as I get asked: “Do you think you can do that?”, I want to find out immediately.
So ….. when a friend asked me if I thought I could crochet her 2 year old daughter a poncho “in pretty, vibrant colors”, I started looking for a pattern right away.
Found a great one on lovely Angie’s site (link here) and used that one to crochet the first one. While browsing the web, I came across a couple more wonderful and inspirational ponchos for kids, for instance here, here and here.
The pattern being a basic granny stripe (tutorial here), this project was a quick one, and while crocheting I thought a nice finishing touch would be a round of my beloved pom-poms (here and here‘s where you can see how I made mine before).
To make the poncho more loose, drapey if you will, I crocheted my clusters of 3 US dc’s/UK tr plus one chain in between them.
The first poncho barely finished, I already had an idea for a second one …..
Figuring it would be nice if my friend and her daughter would have two to choose from, I begun this one with some small granny squares, throwing black into the mix of colors. I first made a “frame”, joining the squares as I went (tutorial here) following the chart.
You make two 5-joined grannies as shown in the photo, and connect these where the arrows are shown. I then continued this one as well using the granny stripes (3 US dc’s/UK tr, one chain; in front and back corner 3 dc/tr, one chain, 3 dc/tr).
Right until the very end I wasn’t too sure about the black, but now that the tassels have been added (and my daughter assured me that this one is cute too) I’m pretty pleased with it myself.
Can’t wait to show my friend!
Love,
Marianne xx
They’re both great and so colourful as usual. The black is an unusual choice but works really well and I love both those trims!

Thank you so very much, dear Sheila! Yes, I agree – the black was an iffy choice, but I’m glad it worked out. Marianne xx
